Dell Printers, Abobe software and most other applications,

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Dell printers require services in order to operate successfully. Often times we receive calls about printing, the cause is some or all the services required to operate the software have been disabled.

The same case is true of many software applications. If the services required to run the program are disabled the software will not operate properly.

Simply reinstalling the software will not resolve this problem. You must manually enable the services so the program will operate properly.

As always, call us if you need support.

Facebook, MySpace, Sonico, LinkedIn, Twitter

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

There are so many social networking sites out there you could spend your whole day updating all of them. The next big thing. A social networking site that will update all your other sites with one click. Maybe someday.

UPDATE: Google and Twitter are now working together. TWOOGLING has arrived!

http://eposter.blogspot.com/2009/02/google-in-twitter.html

Until then, I recommend sticking with them all. Whether your looking for a job, a friend, or networking these sites get your name out there and you’re in control of what’s on the site. It’s always a good idea to remember people are watching. They are all watching. friends, ex-friends, co-workers, employers, ex-employers, neighbors, clients and everyone else you can think of.

Keep your site professional, up-to-date and only provide need to know info. Everyone is watching.

Losing wireless internet signal, lost internet connection

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Wireless internet operates on the 2.4GHz radio frequency. The same frequency as many cordless telephones.

If you have a 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz cordless telephone this could be the issue. 5.8GHz cordless phones often times, are dual band, using the 2.4GHz band to send or receive and the 5.8GHz band to send or receive.

For troubleshooting purposes power off the cordless phone and see how your internet works. Then, power the cordless phone back up and make a telephone call. Did you lose internet connectivity? (actually, you’re losing wireless network connectivity between your computer and your router) Better yet, have someone call your landline while your browsing the web. Did you get disconnected when the phone call came in?

A simple solution is to replace your 2.4GHz or 5.8GHz cordless telephone with the older 900MHz version. You could always do away with the cordless phone all-together.

Either way, we’re always here te help. Call us if you have any questions.

VOIP Internet Telephone

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

magicjack.com and voyze.com

If you’re considering using on of the many Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) services out there, you will find there are many to choose from.

Here a few things to consider:

VOIP requires that you have high speed internet(ie.. DSL, Cable Internet, Satellite Internet)  from where you are call from or receiving calls.

  1. You need to purchase equipment to get started.
  2. Decide where you will be calling to most often and from where.
  3. Monthly fees and overages or additional fees possible.

OK, let’s start with #1: Yes, you will need to purchase your VOIP carriers equipment to get started.

#2: Will you need to make international calls? If so, some providers may have better rates to the country you call the most. You should check into it before you sign the dotted line. Also, it may be less exspensive to ship your VOIP device to the country you want to call and actually have them call you.

#3: Yes, there is a monthly fee. However the fees vary greatly. For example video ready VOIP service can cost $58 a month where as the magicjack.com service cost $1 (yes, one dollar) a month.

Magicjack.com must be connected to a computer and the computer must be powered on to send/receive calls. Other devices like voyze.com is a standalone device that allows you connect directly to the modem/router so a computer is not required.

Web Filter, Parental Control, IM / Email Monitoring, Web Proxy, Blocking Web Sites

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Blocking websites, email and instant messaging is on everyone’s mind. Business Owners/Managers, Parents and Couples alike. Monitoring web traffic is very easy to do,

The best method is prevention. By using a proxy server such as squid for linux you can block internet traffic at the network level. All workstation on the network and wireless network will only be allowed to visit the websites and applications you allow and only when you allow them.

For home workstations http://www1.k9webprotection.com/ is a great free solution for parents.

For a more secretive approach www.iambigbrother.com is a great way to monitor a users every move on your computer. It can record keystrokes, chat logging, email, visited websites and can be monitored live via the internet. It can even be configured to secretly email you screen shots of the users screen at preset intervals.

If you have questions or need assistance for your workstation or your entire network, please call us today!

Virus Spyware Malware Phishing

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Well for the past few months we’ve seen a major increase in nasty viruses and malware. Here are some tips.

First, If you receive a message or popup on your screen indicating you’re infected and all you need to do is purchase this little program to clean your computer you’re probably already infected with malware.

These scammers infect your computer with a hijacker and blackmail you into purchasing their software so they can remove it. But wait! That’s not the worst of it! When you purchase the software that remove the virus they put on your computer they now have your credit card information.  That’s what they really want.

We’ve seen it too many times. If in doubt, your best bet is to call a professional and verify the software is legitimate. If you’ve already been scammed we recommend calling your credit card company and notifying them of the transaction.

The best preventative action you can take is to ensure your anti-virus software is up to date and active on your computer. Your AV software should update daily and scan your computer a minimum of once a week. Using the auto protect option may be overkill in some cases, but if you’re a high risk user you should use auto protect.

What’s a high risk user?

If you download files and programs from the Internet, open emails and attachments from senders you do not know and/or leave our computer powered on 24 hour a day you’re a high risk user. That’s just about everyone.

Be careful, be selective and when in doubt call us with all your questions.
